For the painting "Lovers of Solovyov" Makovsky received the title of academician. She was exhibited in Vienna and immediately received praise. On the canvas are three men who are in a small wooden hut. There is a bottle of moonshine on the table, probably the friends stayed up for long conversations until morning, not paying attention to the fact that the dawn came. The dishes have not yet been cleaned; near it is a huge boiling samovar. All male attention is turned to a bird in a cage that hangs above the table.
With the rising of the sun, she began to sing, making her friends listen to a wonderful, sonorous trill. Their faces depict the pleasure and delight that they experience, enjoying the beautiful nightingale song of the nightingale. They were conquered by the sensitive poetry of nature, embodied in the image of a bird. The artist wanted to show the sensitivity and sensitivity of the souls of ordinary peasants, who, despite rudeness and severity, are able to notice and appreciate the beautiful. The landlord sitting against the wall smiles softly. Opposite him was a shopkeeper, who, despite his seriousness and decorum, also froze in mute delight.
Near the table is a retired soldier who turned his gaze to the cage. The artist’s goal was to make it clear that even the most ordinary people engaged in household chores find true beauty where it would seem difficult to notice. Their faces are riddled with wrinkles, but this does not prevent them from being imbued with love for Russian nature, becoming a part of its mystery and humbly admiring fleeting moments that carry true happiness. These men have a delicate nature that allows them to capture the most sensitive moments and hear the call of nature, which resulted in the delightful singing of the nightingale. This work is compared with Turgenev’s novels, reflecting an understanding of the character of Russian people.
