Dionysius is one of the founders of church painting. The artist lived and worked in Moscow. He, together with his students, took part in painting walls and domes of church institutions, depicting icons and decorating iconostases. For a long time, the master led an art cooperative consisting of clergy. It was they who helped him in creating religious masterpieces.

In 1502-1503, work on the painting "Descent into Hell" was completed in the workshop of the icon painter Dionosius. The central figure of the picture is the image of Jesus Christ himself. To the right and left of him are the ancestors and prophets. Around them are angels, piercing the bodies of demons. They symbolize the victory of the best qualities of man over his filth and vices.

Angels are also located at the bottom of the composition. Next to them are people who have risen after death. The image of the cross complements the image. The picture is made in dark, heavy colors. Orange, characteristic of religious works, interspersed with red and brown were used.

When conducting Sunday services, church ministers often turn to the theme of the descent into Hell of Christ. Hell in this case is the main. plot symbolizing the resurrection. On the icons of Byzantium and in Ancient Russia, such an image was considered canonical. It is an embodiment of victory over death and evil.

However, the Orthodox Church does not use such an image. For icons of this direction of faith, the image of the risen Jesus Christ without the image of the symbolism of hell is more characteristic.
