Nicholas Roerich left after his death an incredible number of works dedicated to heroes and their great deeds. The work "Sadko" is a large panel, which was part of the series of works "Athletic Frieze."
The panel interests the public by the fact that on it we see not the hero Sadko, but an ordinary person. It is believed that Sadko is an epic hero of the Novgorod epic. He was a world famous musician, playing the harp. With his singing and playing, Sadko enchanted the audience. Once Sadko even defeated the sea king, but Roerich refused the pathos plot. He turned to the other side of Sadko's life - he portrayed him as a merchant.
We see a wide deep sea river. Blue waters go far into the horizon. The artist portrayed a truly powerful, Russian river: military and merchant ships go along it, it irrigates the land. A few small ships are floating on the river. It can be seen that the artist is well acquainted with ancient Russian art. Each ship has its own peculiarity, interesting painting and pattern. The ship on which Sadko floats is depicted in the center of the picture. On board there are several sailors and goods that will soon be sold at the fair.
On both banks of the river lies the glorious city of Veliky Novgorod. This city was famous as a center of trade in Russia. The artist intentionally writes a smaller version of the city. Veliky Novgorod is shown rather as a model, but thanks to this manner of writing, we can see the whole city in great detail.
As expected, in the center of the ancient Russian city is a white stone cathedral. Around the cathedral, we see several more snow-white buildings, which are surrounded by a high wall of white stone. To protect Veliky Novgorod from the raids of enemy troops, the city also decided to enclose a high stone wall. The panel is painted with very bright colors. It creates the feeling of an impending holiday or fair.
